The Biography of Ramon Vilanova

Acclaimed by art critics and represented in prominent and distinguished collections throughout Europe, Ramon Vilanova has been described as one of the finest living landscape painters in Europe.  His works are currently in the permanent collections of many museums (see a partial list below), a further testament to the credibility and importance of this extraordinary artist.

Vilanova works exclusively plein aire, giving his compositions a special sensitivity and evoking an emotion of the scene he has chosen to commit to canvas.  He needs to fully experience the environment in order to paint it…….not just the view of the place….but the smell of the flowers, the effects of the breezes, the light streaming and filtering through the foliage and against any backgrounds……the overall feel is critical to his ability to paint.  A photograph or remembrance will not suffice, only real life.  One notices weeds and errant branches and leaves in his paintings, because he paints only what he sees and life, in it’s imperfection, shows us all of nature, not only perfect beauty.  And yet, the paintings are perfect in their representation of the scene as the artist has observed them that day, in that moment.

The artist was born, raised and continues to live and create in the idyllic and wonderful surroundings of rural Catalunya, north of Barcelona in Spain.  He senses the landscape deeply and instinctively and is thoroughly a part of it.  His technique is at once complex and unusual, yet necessary, so that he can infuse the paintings with the sense of what he wishes to convey.  He stains his canvasses by generously spreading oil paints using a spatula.  Then, with his brushes, he models and organizes the oils into the representation of the landscape before him.  He further utilizes a “dripping” and splattering technique analogous and reminiscent of the works of the Abstract Expressionist painter, Jackson Pollack.  Vilanova’s drippings are more contained, and rarely random, appearing in the canvas as an integrating element.  The artists’ creations are complex yet symphonic in style.

Vilanova has a remarkable, intuitive and emotional understanding of color.  He has been described, by several prominent European art critics, as a “colorist”.  He is an instinctual painter, in tune with his environment, and is acutely aware of the tonalities and half-tones which light creates with color.  The world of landscape is what intrigues him…..a farmhouse in a field, an island offshore, an urn overflowing with flowers in a private garden, a field of brilliant wildflowers……

One of the artist’s favorite quotes comes from Renoir, who said: “…..the work of art must dazzle the observer, surround him, tame him…….in it the artist communicates his passion, it is the flow that it emits and through which it includes the observer in it”.

While Vilanova has been exhibiting in Europe, with great success, since the early 1970’s, it was in  the 1980’s that his work began to be acknowledged with dozens of awards and gold medals of artistic achievement.  Today his work is represented in many prestigious public and private collections.
